In the 2007 Texas Community College Journalism Association clip competition, The Ranger was awarded sweepstakes among two-year publications.
The results were announced at the group's annual conference in San Marcos Oct. 12.
Also, the Ranger Online was awarded the Associated Collegiate Press' highest honor, a national Pacemaker, at its fall National College Media Convention Oct. 24-28 in Washington, D.C.
Awards are based on design, ease of navigation, writing and editing, graphics and interactivity, the group's Web site states.
The contest was for work published in fall 2006 when César G. Rodriguez was editor and spring 2007 when Julian Aguilar was editor. Charles Cima was web administrator.
In addition, The Ranger was awarded first place in general excellence and the staff placed first in the headline writing contest.
Sonya Harvey was awarded first place in layout and design for "The Mission," a feature on San Antonio's last drive-in.
Jonathan Munson won first place in sports news for "On your mark, go, run with the music at Symphony 5K" and third place in feature writing for "A closer look at the past," about the founding of St. Philip's.
Diego A. Rios was awarded second place in sports news for "President claims right to change college mascot."
Manuel Durán, Allison Doyle, Derik Villanueva and Alberto Delcampo were jointly awarded second place in picture page or panel for "Kids go hog-wild over rodeo pig race."
Denise Blaz earned a second place in layout and design for "Runway models, designers needed for fashion show."
Durán earned second place in sports photo for a fencing photo titled "En garde" and honorable mention in feature photo for "Mission Trip" about students from the Methodist Student Center helping residents of Port Arthur repair their hurricane-damaged homes.
Villanueva earned second place in sports action photo for "Lady Rangers."
Jared Solis earned third place in news writing for "Student questions use of assigned literature."
