Knowing how to speak more than one language seems to be important these days.
The minimum requirement for a foreign language class is three hours for all degree plans. This college offers Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin and Spanish.
The highest enrolling of these languages is Spanish.
Spanish is the highest enrolling class because many students here are of Hispanic origin and either speak Spanish fluently or know a little, Anna Budzinski, foreign languages chair, said.
This college offers about 53 Spanish classes on campus ranging from SPAN 1300, Beginning Conversational Spanish, to SPAN 2312, Intermediate Spanish 2, taught by a total of six professors.
The lowest enrolling of these languages is Chinese, according to Budzinski.
There are only two CHIN 1411, Beginning Chinese 1 classes and one CHIN 1412 Beginning Chinese 2 classes on campus, all taught by Len McClure.
McClure has posted fliers titled "Think Chinese" on most bulletins around campus, in an effort to recruit students to enroll in his classes.
"McClure has been trying to recruit students to study Chinese for the longest time," Budzinski said.
With new foreign businesses moving to this country like Toyota, the job market is more open to multilingual people.
"English is simply not enough now," Budzinski said.
The foreign languages department at this college is working to improve class curriculum and enrollment in classes.
"We are currently expanding the Arabic program and working to add more languages," Budzinski said.
