Is The Ranger biased?

Editor:

I noticed that when Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton visited San Antonio Feb. 13, she was on the front page of The Ranger two days later. However, when presidential candidates Sen. Barrack Obama and former Gov. Mike Huckabee visited the Alamo City, Obama's visit gets buried and Huckabee isn't mentioned. Did I miss the issue where The Ranger officially endorsed Clinton? What gives?

Think before speaking

Editor:

After reading your article on "Interracial couples still misunderstood by families, society" there was one item that concerns me about the bakery incident in Castroville. First of all, we own the only bakery in Castroville and after talking to the author of the article, he said the girl could not remember the name of the town or the name of the bakery at the time of the interview, so someone came up with Castroville.

There are bakeries in Boerne, Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, etc. ... in the area.

Secondly, 75 percent of our workforce is Hispanic, my sister is married to a Hispanic, I was married to a Hispanic, we hire blacks, Asians, Europeans, etc. ... we do not discriminate between races and both of our local businesses have been in business for over 60 years. We are favorably written up and referred by others in Texas Monthly magazine on a regular basis.

Thirdly, I think this couple has a notion that if they are not taken care of in a specific way, they pull the race card out. Seems to me the couple have their own issues that they feel uncomfortable with and they should deal with them before striking out at the world! Sometimes you have to speak up if you think you're the next in line!

Editor's note: The source provided the town name after the interview.

Disappointed with STD article

Editor:

I was disappointed to see the headline on the front page of the Feb. 22 issue: "Candler pool causes STD, doctor tells infected student."

That was clearly an unfounded and irresponsible statement that caused an undue concern among students and others as well. The selection of that headline along with the worthiness of the ensuing article was a poor choice.

Those who would know more about the science of this would state that it would be impossible for an STD to be transmitted through swimming pool water. Perhaps you should check with the biology department for a more thorough explanation.

Lack of evidence not enough

Editor:

In the field of infectious diseases, we constantly have to debunk myths. The microbiologists in the department of biological sciences were very unhappy to see the article reporting an "STD scare" linked to the Candler pool. The author of the article, Ryan Johnston, cited an informational Web site on trichomoniasis published by the Centers of Disease Control.

We hope everyone reading this article went to that site because it unequivocally states that trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease. Mr. Johnston stated that the CDC did not rule out the possibility of transmission by pool water. So, it is extremely irresponsible to report something based on "lack" of evidence.

Trichomoniasis vaginalis is an exclusively sexually transmitted protozoan. When a person contracts the disease, it can only come from a sexual partner carrying the disease that was contracted from another person with the disease.

Discussion of STD's is a very sensitive issue even for many doctors. If a practicing physician told a patient that the infection came from any place other than a sexual partner, then that physician was most likely trying to ease the news. What she should have told her patient is that the disease came from a sexual partner, period. Then leave it to the patient to figure out the rest.
