Ballet San Antonio invites students to forget their conception of ballet and enjoy a fresh perspective with their "Off Center" production.

The production features choreography by Mayra Worthen, Ballet San Antonio's artistic director, as well as input by other company members.

Founded by Worthen in 1985, Ballet San Antonio's mission is one of community consciousness and awareness, seeking to be a leading artistic institution and to provide inspiring performances.

Off Center caps off the end of Ballet San Antonio's 2007-2008 season with nine pieces of classical and modern ballet inspired by contemporary music.

The ballet will be performed to the sounds of "The Second Time Around" by Frank Sinatra, to a piano concerto written by Keith Emerson, known for his work with the super-group Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Worthen says she wishes students would open up to ballet performances.

"It's not what you think," she says. "It's not a girly thing. People should come out and see how much fun it will be."

She also said that because the pace of the show is so quick, a viewer finding themselves not being particularly fond of a piece should just hang in there. "Every piece has something for everybody," she said.

Off Center will open at 7 p.m. March 7 and 8 in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center.

Tickets will be available at the door or in advance at the Ballet San Antonio office at 903 Proton Rd.
