Where are all the students?

This is a question that the student life's intramural office should be asking themselves.

After several cancellations and postponements, it seems the student life intramural office has been in a slump.

A three-on-three soccer tournament Feb. 22 at Bennett Field was canceled.

The reason given for the cancellation was that there was not enough entries to conduct a competitive and successful tournament.

Several students have stated that they were not even aware of a tournament.

"If I would have known about it, I probably could have convinced a couple of people to come out and play," business sophomore Alfredo Alfaro said.

The slump is even affecting nontraditional sports, such as the Dance Dance Revolution Tournament that was scheduled for Tuesday.

For those unfamiliar with Dance Dance Revolution, they need only to walk into the Loftin Student Center and find the arcade game with several people surrounding a dancer who stomps, contorts and steps madly on, an illuminated metal platform that blasts techno pop.

The reason given for the cancellation of this event again was the lack of student participation.

"I participated in the event last semester, but this semester there was no flyers or anything that I saw to remind me or motivate me to participate," Lori Yanez, liberal arts freshman, said. "I knew about the tournament coming up, but I didn't want to participate because I didn't feel that it was an exciting event."

When asked what could have been done to promote the event better, Yanez added, "Put papers, fliers or announcements around the game. It makes it easier for the people who play it to notice and remember it."

Student life's policy is not to put fliers directly on walls, and no bulletin board is nearby.

When asked about the low student turnout, Jorge Posadas, director of student life, replied, "Student interest changes with the times. Last year, Dance Dance Revolution was a big hit with the students; this year not so much.

"We won't know what the students are into unless the students inform us what they're into."

He later commented, "Students should take advantage in participating in these events. College is not just about books. It's about getting together in informal events and interacting with each other to promote a greater college experience."

Prizes like iPod shuffles and Nanos are given away at these events, encouraging the participants to be as competitive as possible.

The next challenging event that student life will be hosting will be a two-day swim relay at 9:40 a.m. March 10 and 1:40 p.m. March 11 in Candler natatorium.
