"If God chose these political leaders, why do they say all these bad things about each other?" Khaligh said.
"Why do they try to trash each other?"
Khaligh also said more people have been killed in the name of God than for any other reason, which brought him to suggest those who seek morality and religion need look no further than the Middle East.
"That is where religion started," Khaligh said.
"In the name of God, every morning they read the Holy books, then they close the book and shoot each other."
He said morality lies not in people's belief in God but what they find in themselves.
"(They can find it) by volunteering, by helping in their neighborhood or getting in an organization which helps the homeless," Khaligh said.
