Staff Council is planning to jump on the bandwagon and go green.

Member Velma Willard attended the "Go Green" Committee meeting March 6 at the request of President Gil Castillo to report what the committee would be completing for the campus.

Willard said the committee would kick off on Earth Day, April 17, by presenting information about protecting the environment and recycling.

"They are talking about recycling in offices," Castillo said. "We've done it before, and it has fallen apart. I feel it's very important."

The group will be selling "Go Green" shirts to raise money for the committee, which prompted Willard to ask the council if they could sell bandanas during the event.

"It goes along with 'Go Green' at SAC, because it's a recyclable item," she said. "Since this is an ongoing campaign throughout the year, it would be a great way to be supportive of the college through the Staff Council."

If the council sells bandanas during this event, Willard clarified they would use the money for scholarships for campus staff.

Willard also suggested they approach the Christmas door decorating contest by asking participants to use only recyclable materials for their presentations.

The council also spoke on issues concerning Employee Development Day and the amount of input the council needs to provide for the event.

Member Gracie Savage attended the event last semester and complained there was not enough participation from the council.

"There wasn't a lot of involvement," Savage said. "A lot more needed to be involved."

Castillo explained there is a committee for Employee Caps Development Day and any information he received for the event he would pass out during the next Staff Council meeting.

In other news, Castillo said the district has given $2,000 to Staff Council since the cancellation of the parking lot fund-raiser, which was used to fund scholarships for staff of the college, because of liability issues.

It was brought to the attention of the council that district has taken away the plaque given to the District Employee of the Year from the five colleges in the Alamo Community College District.

The employee chosen only gets a plaque for receiving Employee of the Year Cap, therefore, if they take that away, all the employee gets is recognition and a handshake from the chancellor.

"What's the point, if they're not getting anything?" Willard said. "Not even a coffee or something?"

Castillo said he would contact district and follow up on the issue.

The next meeting will be at 2:30 p.m. April 15 in Room 120 of the visual arts center.
