The annual Alamo Community College District poetry competition celebrating National Poetry Month will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center.
"Words are important, and there is no better way to celebrate writing, than by sharing poetry," said English Instructor Jane Focht-Hansen.
Seventeen students submitted original poetry by the deadline March 27, but not all will be invited to share their works on stage.
Focht-Hansen said only three students will win money but there will be honorable mentions.
The first-place winner will receive $125, second place $100 and third place $75.
Judges will be Dr. John Hammond, director of public relations; English Professor Amy Murphy; and English Instructors Ernie Tsacalis and Kimberley Ramsey-Palmer. All four judges are creative writers.
Judging will be "based on originality of language and subject, poetic range or variety, structure, simplicity, insight, impact and best use of language expression skills," Focht-Hansen said.
The poetry celebration is intended to inspire students by allowing them to use transformative, expressive philosophies, metaphors and images, she said.
"Poetry is not only expressing yourself verbally, but it's another way of teaching outside the box, with a creative twist," Focht-Hansen said.
The event is free and open to the public.
