The two-page guide outlines the basic steps of what should be done in case of fires, evacuations, suspicious packages, bomb threats, suspicious behavior of persons, shootings, weather emergencies, floods, hazardous material spills, gas leaks, medical emergencies and media inquiries.
"It's taking the information that is pretty standard for dealing with emergency situations and condensing it into a flier-type publication," Don Adams, chief of police and creator of the guide, said. "The idea was to give people a quick reference as opposed to a book."
The guide also is published in a brochure form, Adams said.
The DPS plans to post the guides in classrooms and reproduce them for distribution around campus.
The guide also will be distributed to incoming students enrolled in the orientation classes SDEV 0170, Orientation to College, and SDEV 0370, Personal and Academic Success.
Students wanting more details can read the 51-page document emergency response plan at http://www.accd.edu/sac/sacmain/erp/erp_rev06_07.pdf.
"In the past, the thinking was to have a plan in place. But what the end-user needs is something a little more user-friendly," Adams said.
In case of any emergency on campus, the first and most important action is to notify the police department immediately at 210-222-0911, according to the guide.
The guide states it best, "Do not assume someone else has called police or emergency personnel."
The guide is posted on the department of public safety Web site, at the top of the page in red, and can be seen at http://www.accd.edu/district/dps/main.htm.
