Runners take their marks as they get settled in their blocks.

The start alone is critical to this race.

As the gun goes off, each runner has one goal in mind: to finish first.

The 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at the University of Texas in Austin began Wednesday and will continue through Saturday.

Runners, ranging from high school to professional, will showcase their talents to compete for gold.

Athletes from all across the United States will be competing in front of an estimated crowd of 50,000.

However, anyone who has ever been to Texas Relays knows, like psychology sophomore Cindy Cervantes, there is more than just running going on at the stadium Mike A. Myers Stadium, where the event is happening, becomes an outdoor party, and the after party continues at night on Sixth Street.

"People in athletics go for running, but a lot of people go to party and socialize," Cervantes said. Cervantes describes Sixth Street at night as "crazy."

Public relations freshman Zobeyda Shields will be attending the event for the first time. "I'm going for parties and a little bit of running."

"I just want to be out there, and if I die, I die happy," Shields said, remembering her first experience on Sixth Street.

"I'm going to see the hot chicks, that's about it," said biology sophomore José Correa; and as far as Sixth Street, he said, "Don't step on my shoes."

Texas Relays will entertain those who want to watch the running as well as those who want to have fun.

Saturday's event will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mark A. Myers Stadium on the UT-Austin campus.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $15 reserved seating.

The event becomes crowded fast and parking is limited, but a shuttle will be available for transportation to and from the stadium.
