For struggling college students, a little extra cash couldn't hurt to pay down student loans, buy that new laptop or take a much-needed vacation. This year there is incentive to file a federal income tax return by the deadline Tuesday. All those who file their federal income tax for the 2007 tax year, have a valid Social Security number and earned at least $3,000 in income will receive an economic stimulus rebate check set to hit mailboxes in May.

Financial aid still available to those taking summer classes

During fall semester, reference letters will not be necessary for scholarship applications.
For students who are interested in going to summer school and have completed the 2007-08 Free Application for Federal Student Aid application, the financial aid summer 2008 applications will be available beginning April 14 at the financial aid office in Room 101 of Fletcher Administration Center.

Concerned about the increased incidences of violence on U.S. campuses, more than 50 staff and faculty members of Palo Alto College met during spring break to hear a presentation on the subject. Several staff members present said they were not prepared to handle a violent incident on campus and were anxious to address the topic.

The San Antonio Fire Department found that the pressure in the fire hydrant closest to the parking garage had low pressure, resulting in a delayed reaction to putting out a car fire March 5. Fire hydrants should have 90 pounds per square inch of pressure, or PSI, however, the hydrant the SAFD attempted to use only had 45 PSI, which caused the fire suppressant system in the garage to be unsuccessful.

Academic Council considers changing Lot 21 into mixed student-faculty parking

At Tuesday's Academic Council meeting, Tim Rockey, dean of continuing education and training network, suggested that because parking Lot 21 is being underutilized it should be changed to a mixed lot similar to the parking garage. No decision was reached and it was decided that the lot shall remain faculty only until more studies are conducted on how the lot is used.

Crista Marichalar Branch, a 35-year-old lawyer, is running for the District 8 seat under the slogan, "Creating opportunities together." Branch said she has always wanted to get into politics and thought that the Alamo Community College board of trustees was a great way to start.

Gary Beitzel is running for re-election to keep his seat on the board of trustees for District 8. "I believe in the community college system, and I believe in second chances," Beitzel said. "I am a product of having a second chance to complete college." Beitzel dropped out of college and entered the Air Force.
