After a long journey that started in spring 2007, the district has finally adopted a set of shared values by which all of the colleges will adhere.
The May 13 Policy and Long-Range Planning Committee approved the values set by a committee headed by Northwest Vista College President Jacqueline Claunch that began meeting in March 2007.
Shared values was one of Chancellor Bruce Leslie's first priorities when he joined the Alamo Community College District in November 2006.
"When I first came on, we talked about the fact that we did not have one set of shared values," Leslie said. "Each college had their own, and the district actually had two."
Included in the board packet was a report on the values committees' progress.
The committee members were Stacey Johnson, interim vice president of academic affairs at Palo Alto College; Mark Barnes, media services and college archivist at St. Philip's College; Manuel Cerda, III, senior human resources here; J. Martin Ortega, director of admissions and records here; Carol Riley, ethics and compliance officer; Elizabeth Hudspeth, chair of the communications department at Northeast Lakeview; and Barbara Griest-Devora, English professor at Northwest Vista College.
The values committee started by identifying and preparing a list of values that would be included in an online survey distributed to faculty and staff throughout the district. A draft of the values that resulted from that survey was presented to the chancellor's Executive Committee in January.
Revisions were requested, and a final draft that incorporated online comments was returned to the chancellor's Executive Committee April 11.
The board approved the shared values without objection, and all that is left is for them to be rolled out.
The introduction to the values read, "We, the members of the Alamo Community College District, are committed to building our individual and collective character through a set of shared values. These values guide and inspire our thoughts and actions, fulfilling our vision and mission in service to our students and communities."
