"Once you flip the switch, you don't go back," he said.

Cleary said to remember that if there are issues with district or the college, to go through the governance structure and make an agenda to get things done.

"Do not let things linger. There are a lot of needs, and by what I've seen, a lot of pent-up needs," Cleary said.

In other business, English Instructor Jane Focht-Hansen gave a presentation on the information she compiled, along with English Professor Dawn Elmore-McCrary, on 2008-09 faculty compensation.

During the Faculty Senate meeting April 2, members suggested asking for a 6 percent increase in salary from the board of trustees. During Wednesday's meeting, the senate came to a consensus to ask for an 8 percent increase.

Along with the 8 percent increase, the senate also would like to continue to pay nursing faculty a stipend of $5,000 for faculty with a bachelor's degrees and $7,500 for faculty with a master's degrees, along with external funds.

Originally, Focht-Hansen had suggested asking for a 7 percent increase, but several members stated that they would be underselling themselves, including Librarian John Deosdade, who said they should ask for an 8 percent increase every year as a minimum.

The information Focht-Hansen presented stated the national average for faculty is $57,772, while the Texas average is $49,824, which adds up to a difference of $7,948 or 13.8 percent below the national average.

Focht-Hansen also mentioned that base salaries for faculty with a master's degree is $5,547 lower than local independent school districts, or 12. 7 percent.

The information the senate compiled is still in draft copy, but will be updated and presented to the board of trustees.

The next meeting will be at 2:15 p.m. April 30 in Room 120 of the visual arts center.
