The department usually brings prominent Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists to speak. This year, the department decided to invite Cynthia Esparza of the San Angelo Standard-Times, a former Ranger photographer, Chair Marianne Odom said.
Esparza has been covering the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints polygamist compound raid in Eldorado since the story broke April 3.
The story has garnered national attention.
She said she plans to make a presentation about the coverage by Brian Connelly, Patrick Dove and herself.
They were able to get inside the YFZ ranch and take photos of the women and children inside the fort and the myriad agencies involved, Esparza said.
Esparza attended this college from 1999 to 2002, after participating in the Urban Journalism Workshop in 1998.
"They taught me everything I know," she said of the department.
She graduated from Texas State University-San Marcos in 2004.
The lecture will be at 7 p.m. May 1 in Room 120 of visual arts and is open to the public.
