The San Antonio College Programs and Services for Women and Non-Traditional Students will sponsor the 2008 Women Empowered Conference or WE, 9 a.m-3 p.m. May 15, in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center.

On May 21, 2002, the women's center sponsored the first WE conference, and about 100 women attended the first event.

Due to the success of the event, annual conferences have been held through the women's center, and in 2007 about 200 women attended the event.

"We are looking to offer information for individuals coming to school and current students," said Abby B. Gonzalez, Seguir Adelante director, said.

According to the women's center Web site, this free outreach conference provides women with information, encouragement and success strategies to enhance their educational and workforce opportunities.

The conference also serves as a means of introducing women to a world of possibilities.

A special focus is placed on targeting adult "re-entry" women who have experienced a disruption in their education and need encouragement to continue.

This target group includes displaced homemakers, single parents and dislocated workers.

Gonzalez said they want to "stress the importance of enrollment and registration" for new students, while also helping "students looking for support to stay in school."

The conference allows women to choose one of four workshop tracks, which include, the blue, gold and green tracks and camino rojo, a track to help Spanish speakers.

The blue track allows women to focus on career exploration where they can learn to identify and connect their career interests so they can pursue satisfying job opportunities.

The gold track is for personal career enhancement which is designed for women who are seeking professional growth and development while maximizing their personal strength.

The green track is to help with leadership development, which teaches women to enhance the leadership abilities and attitudes they need to get ahead in the workplace and school.
