Students in Free Enterprise, also known as SIFE, won first runner-up at the regional competition in Dallas on March 17 against other two-year colleges.

SIFE is a nonprofit national organization that helps students learn market economics, finances, business ethics, stainability and skills for success in a free enterprise system in a real working situation, according to the SIFE Web site at www.sife.org.

At the competition, six SIFE members presented judges with the outcomes of projects they completed in the past, such as teaching high school and college students about financial aid, said Dr. Charles Hunt, SIFE faculty adviser and a business management professor.

Other projects the SIFE team has completed include the Making a Million by Investing simulation, an anti-piracy public service announcement, and assisting several San Antonio businesses in overall improvements.

SIFE members arranged seminars at various high schools to teach students that funding is available.

On the scoring cards, judges responded positively to this college's SIFE chapter, writing comments such as: "awesome job teaching students about FAFSA!" and "very well executed project."

Presentations were judged by the presidents and CEOs of companies that support the global SIFE organization, he said.

The supporting companies also came to recruit students. The Dallas regional competition attracted companies such as Best Buy, Lowe's, Neiman Marcus, Aflac, Wells Fargo and Nestlé Purina.

This college's chapter of SIFE is already looking to recruit members for the fall.

Students can join the club as an extracurricular activity or enroll in BMGT 2309-001, Leadership/SIFE.

Hunt is looking to create a mascot for next semester's team.

"I would like a mascot to recruit students and to take to elementary schools," Hunt said, "It could represent SIFE, or even this college."

Hunt has considered mascots such as a superhero, panda bear or dollar bill, but he is open to suggestions.

To suggest a mascot, or join the SIFE club, see Hunt in Room 565 of Moody Learning Center or call 733-2850.
