With constant warnings of global warming threatening the Earth paraded in magazines and films, this college has taken an interest in becoming environmentally friendly.
A major topic during the Staff Council meeting Tuesday with the volunteer services council was the Go Green Committee's Earth Day events Thursday.
"Recycling is going to be a big thing to happen," President Gil Castillo said. "Dr. (Robert) Zeigler really wants this to happen."
Castillo said the campus has tried in previous years to initiate a better recycling program, but efforts fell short and the project was dropped.
Currently, the college's recycling vendor, Abitibi-Consolidated Inc., only recycles paper, and the committee would like to expand to plastics, aluminum cans and other recyclable materials.
"There are a lot of students that are on the committee and want to do this," President-Elect Cynthia Hernandez said. "It's a good thing."
During the event, titled Go Green SAC! Environmental Awareness Fair, the council originally wanted to sell bandanas; however, because of to a lack of time to initiate the idea, council members said they would volunteer to help with refreshments instead.
"This is an ongoing campaign, so there will be other opportunities," member Velma Willard. "This is a way to help support them with this important endeavor."
In other business, council members continued their discussion on the compensation study and when it will be finished.
"Everybody is in limbo right now because nobody knows what the chancellor is going to do," Castillo said.
He said the board of trustees may be able to review the findings of the compression component of the compensation study during the May meeting and determine a plan.
He also advised members to remain knowledgeable about the upcoming trustee elections and the candidates' promises not to raise taxes.
"It's going to be on the taxpayers," Castillo said.
"It can't be all on the students, and money has to come from somewhere."
In other news, council members spoke about the upcoming Employee Development Day May and what events they would like to have.
