Student publications garner awards

Four staffers and an adviser attended TIPA, but the publications were not represented at SPJ.
This college's journalism program faced off against two-year and four-year colleges such as the University of Texas at Austin, Texas Christian, Texas State and Baylor universities.
The Ranger won five awards at the SPJ conference, while The Fourth Write placed second in student magazines.
The Ranger took home top honors as the best all-around, nondaily student newspaper and also ranked third as the best affiliated Web site.
A nondaily newspaper is a paper printed four or fewer times per week.
In feature writing, Regis L. Roberts brought home second place for his article, "Mission trip aids East Texans." The piece descrobed a Methodist Student Center's trip to Port Arthur to help a local family rebuild its home.
Julio Borjón, Jon Coker and Justin Gomez shared the second-place prize in editorial cartooning.
In breaking news photography, D.A. James won third place for his photo, "Dancers pass out during event."
Alberto Delcampo won second-place honors for his picture, "Pig Lindsey Loham wipes out in the curve," in the feature photography category.
At the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association conference, The Ranger brought home 14 awards, including the Newspaper Division 2 overall excellence category.
The Ranger's Web site (www.theranger.org) received three honorable mentions: general Web site excellence, Derik Villanueva in best use of multimedia and Charles Cima for best interactivity.
In Division 2 newspapers, The Ranger took first place in overall excellence.
The Ranger also gathered six honorable mentions and one first-place finish for individual works.
Ryan Johnston wrote a first-place news feature, "Ignorance kills," and received honorable mention for his sports page design from Sept. 14, 2007.
Sonya Harvey took honorable mention for her sports feature "Anything goes" and single subject presentation, "Hookah."
Honorable mentions also went to Adriana F. DeLeon for her feature story, "Son, Hero, Friends."
Bridgette Sturts also received honorable mention for her picture story, "Orphanages."
In editorial cartoons, Borjón won honorable mention with his work, "Higher Education."
The Fourth Write received three awards, including Harvey's honorable mention column/essay, "I'm with the band."
Villanueva added to his awards by placing third in picture stories for his piece, "Lucha Libre."
Jared Solis took home second place in feature photos for "Playing with fire."
