Shopping at the local farmer's markets can help save the environment.

Local foods are fresher and more nutritious than those found in the supermarkets and are good for the local economy, according to LocalHarvest.com, an organic and local food Web site.

Jerome and Faith Agold own their farm, Agold Farms in Boerne, and sell their products regularly at farmer's markets around San Antonio.

The goal of a farmer's market is to centrally join local farmers who want to sell their self-grown products.

Agold products are completely natural with no chemicals added or influence by gamma rays.

The farm grows their products using 70 acres of organic compost and filtered well water. This allows for the crops to grow faster, last longer and hold more moisture.

"We don't have trucks driving from California, we don't preserve the crops for months, and all of our products are totally natural," Jerome Agold said at a farmer's market at Olmos Basin Park.

Agold Farms grows carrots, green onions, okra, radishes, tomatoes and sweet potatoes, as well as herbs, gourds and plant bedding.

Buying produce from farmer's markets is not more expensive than purchasing from a supermarket.

The farm's produce prices are comparable to those found at a grocery store, Jerome Agold said.

Grocers such as Whole Foods Market or Sun Harvest are another option for environmentally friendly foods.

Whole Foods and Sun Harvest supply organic produce, meaning the food has no manmade toxins.

"You couldn't find a store more dedicated to organics," said Sari Jane Newell, the coffee, tea and chocolate buyer for Whole Foods located in the Quarry.

To cut down on CO2 emissions, Whole Foods is converting the delivery trucks to biodiesel fuel and implementing a fuel-saving system that allows the engine to be turned off completely at loading and delivery, according to its Web site at www.wholefoodsmarket.com.

I'm wondering why someone from Boerne doesn't offer their products to a farmer's market locally. I would love to buy from them but the mentioned locations are far from Boerne. (Continued…)
