Want to support cancer-awareness athletic events but you are sun sensitive?

The American Cancer Society has the event for you.

Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event to celebrate survivors of cancer, remember people lost to the disease and raise money for research.

The overnight event is designed to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps.

This year, the relay will be May 9-10 at Southwest High School, 11914 Dragon Lane.

Northwest Vista College will be sponsoring a team called NVC-Wildcats led by team captain Roxanna Hernandez whose mother is an 18-year cancer survivor.

"Anyone who is a cancer survivor is more than welcome to come to the event so we can have a big celebration in their honor," Hernandez said. "I decided to participate in the relay to honor her."

To help raise money for the team, the Wildcats are raffling $2 tickets to win gift cards.

The prizes include a $50 gift card to Carrabba's Italian Restaurant, $20 gift certificate to Chili's restaurant, $50 Kona Grill Restaurant at La Cantera and a $25 gift card to H-E-B food stores.

"It means a lot to any team or person when they find out they receive money because it motivates them to keep going," Hernandez said.

"Our goal is to have enough people to participate in the event and to raise $1,500 before the relay," Hernandez said, adding she would like to have at least 15 members.

People who want to register can join a team for free or donate money to a team or a specific person.

To join Hernandez's team or to donate, go to her Web site here and simply click on the buttons labeled Join Our Team or Donate.

Whether it is a family member, a friend, or even ourselves, everyone is affected be cancer one way or the other.

MySpace page holders can add the e-mail rflswa@yahoo.com as a friend to help promote awareness of American Cancer Society.

For more information on the Northwest Vista team, call Hernandez at (210) 348-2178 or e-mail her at rhernandez132@mail.accd.edu.
