Winney said the point was to have some consistency through the summer, but he added that more casual attire would be acceptable for work-study students.

Winney acknowledged that many of the guidlines are subjective and do not have specifics like where the hem of a skirt must be in relation to the knee. What is "appropriate" would be determined by the colleges and departments, he said.

While the five colleges follow district guidelines, Northeast Lakeview College is unique in that faculty would often wear golf-style shirts when representing the college in the public and on Fridays when more casual attire was appropriate, President Eric Reno said.

These shirts were not mandatory and not part of any dress code, he said, and there is really no dress enforcement to speak of. Inappropriate dress would be handled on a case-by-case basis, and nothing has come up that would have required any action to be taken.

President Robert Zeigler remembers when, for example, women were not allowed to wear pants suits.

He said the standard has changed from specific restrictions to general guidelines. Rules on dress have changed with the times and culture, he said, and have changed for the better.

St. Philip's, Palo Alto and Northwest Vista colleges likewise do not have enforcement policies.

Samet said his consern is that a staff member's dress does not affect their work, which is the attitude of the counseling department.

He understands the importance of dressing appropriately but thinks one's attire should not hinder them in any way, he said.

The District, especially SAC, has many more important issues to tackle that certainly warrant more attention. I am well aware of Mr. Samet's hard work on behalf of disabled students at SAC, and concern over what he wears is ridiculous! He is a true professional who has always treated me with respect.
