Overbearing odor from water and smoke damage quickly laid those plans to rest, however.
President Robert Ziegler, walking out of the first floor of Moody at about 11 a.m. after surveying the area and speaking with staff, said counseling would be moved from the first floor, where damage was thought to be minimal, to the employee lounge in Loftin Student Center.
Jessica Howard, interim executive vice president, said a skeleton crew would move out of Moody to continue counseling work.
Ziegler said laptops would be brought to the employee lounge for counseling staff to use. He said counseling would operate from the employee lounge in Loftin through Friday and is expected to return to Moody by Monday.
Although daytime classes in Moody were canceled, evening classes will be moved to open rooms in other buildings, Howard said. The revised schedule will be posted on the college Web site and distributed through e-mail.
No decision had been made by 1 p.m. on Friday classes.
Ziegler said there is no estimate of the damage yet, adding that librarians checked books and computers, luckily finding no damage.
He said there is contingency money in the college's budget that will be used for repairs.
English Chair Alex Bernal sat on a railing on the east side of Moody waiting to meet students from his American literature class to redirect them to their regular classroom.
Bernal said he did not know until this morning that Moody would be closed. He had planned to have his students learn research techniques using databases maintained by the library.
Instead, he waited for his students to show up and conduct the day's lesson in his regular classroom in Gonzales Hall.
"We're going to go to Plan B," he said.
Plan B was not so simple for psychology Professor Joe Sullivan, who said he was not pleased with this college's emergency back-up plan.
"There is no Plan B," he said, noting one-fifth of classes at this college are in Moody. "What if the building was destroyed? Would we just end the semester?"
