District 5 candidates receive money from congressional campaign, wife of trustee

Voting will be 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday.

Ramiro Nava, former Edgewood Independent School District trustee and principal of Neil Armstrong Elementary School, reported $4,892 contributions and no expenditures in the reporting period from April 12 to May 4 in the race for District 5 of the Alamo College board of trustees. Full story

    Unopposed candidates are appointed by acclamation.

    The Alamo Colleges board of trustees unanimously approved the cancellation of trustee races in District 6 and District 7 at the regular meeting Tuesday. District 6 trustee Gene Sprague was the only applicant to file in District 6. Yvonne Katz, former Spring Branch ISD superintendent and president of Vision Into Action Associates, was the only applicant to file in District 7.

    Zárate is the only sitting trustee to submit an application.

    District 5 trustee Roberto Zárate will seek re-election to the Alamo Colleges board of trustees. The District 5 seat is one of three spots on the board on the May 12 ballot. Seats in District 6 and 7 will also be on the ballot. Zárate said he submitted his application Friday, and board liaison Sandra Mora said she received Zárate's application today.

    Today is the application deadline for inclusion on May 12 ballot.

    Dr. Gene Sprague has submitted an application to seek his fourth term on the Alamo Colleges board of trustees. If no one else submits an application today, the three races set for the May 12 ballot will be uncontested and under district rules will not require a public vote.

    Board rejects November trustee election

    The Alamo Colleges board of trustees unanimously rejected a resolution to move its election date from May to November of even numbered years at its Jan. 24 meeting in Killen Center. The board considered the measure because of changes in Texas election law resulting from the enactment of Senate Bill 100 during the 82nd session of the Texas Legislature.

    District 7 trustee Blakely Fernandez said she would not seek re-election to the Alamo Colleges board of trustees. In a phone interview Thursday, Fernandez said her family and Tuggey Fernandez LLP, the law practice she established in May, prevent her from dedicating the time necessary to serving on the board.

    A candidate for District 7 of Alamo Colleges board of trustees, Yvonne Katz, former superintendent of Spring Branch ISD, northwest of Houston, resigned from her position there Aug. 30, 2004, after she failed to inform that district's board of trustees that she was a paid consultant for an energy-conservation company that she recommended to the district.

    As of 5 p.m. today, four applicants had submitted applications for three races for the Alamo Colleges board of trustees election May 12. Today was the last day to submit applications. Board liaison Sandra Mora said she received an application today from Ramiro Nava, who filed in District 5.

    Ranger files open records request to receive board candidates’ information

    The Ranger has filed an open records request using the Texas Public Information Act to obtain applications for four positions on the Alamo Colleges board of trustees in the May 12 election. Board liaison Sandra Mora would not release submitted ballot applications for the candidates to the public without receiving an open records request from The Ranger.

    Correction: Applications can be filed for a place on the ballot until 5 p.m. Monday is the last day to submit ballot applications for the Alamo Colleges board of trustees election May 12. Seats in Districts 5, 6 and 7 will be on the ballot. Candidates must live in the district they plan to represent.

    The office of the board liaison is acting as the election administrator for the Alamo Colleges board of trustees election until the district hires a new general counsel. In a phone interview Monday, Chancellor Bruce Leslie said the office of legal services handled past elections, but because district general counsel Retha Karnes left in January, the office was understaffed.

Ramiro Nava, former Edgewood Independent School District trustee and principal at Neil Armstrong Elementary School, is challenging Zárate for the District 5 seat in the May 12 election.

    The incumbent receives contributions from a fellow trustee and business leaders.

    District 5 candidates’ financial disclosures show that the candidates are operating on different budgets. Incumbent District 5 trustee Roberto Zárate reported that his campaign has received $5,700 in campaign contributions while Ramiro Nava, former Edgewood Independent School District trustee and principal of Neil Armstrong Elementary School, reported no contributions in this reporting period.
