The Ranger is one of seven community college student newspapers named as finalists for the Pacemaker, a national honor for general excellence in collegiate newspapers for 83 years.

The Associated Collegiate Press, which co-sponsors the award with the Newspaper Association of America Foundation, announced the finalists today in the contest considered the Pulitzer Prize of college newspapers.

Finalists also included two other newspapers from Texas community colleges, The Flare from Kilgore College and The Collegian from Tarrant County College.

This is the second Pacemaker nomination for The Ranger for the academic year 2009-10.

The Ranger Online, the newspaper's Web edition, was named one of 22 finalists in the "large school" category for the Online Pacemaker March 31. This category includes two-year and four-year colleges from around the country.

The current Ranger editor, Laura Garcia, was editor in spring 2010, and journalism sophomore Jason B. Hogan was editor in fall 2009.

Web editors were journalism sophomore Regis L. Roberts in fall 2009 and current Web editor D.A. James in spring 2010.

Pacemaker winners will be announced at the 89th annual Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Advisers convention in Louisville Oct. 30.

Professional journalists in the Washington, D.C., area judged the newspaper entries on coverage and content; quality of writing and reporting; leadership on the opinion page; evidence of in-depth reporting: layout and design; and photography; art and graphics.

The Ranger has won the Pacemaker 10 times and was inducted in the Hall of Fame of the Associated Collegiate Press and the National Newspaper Association Foundation in 1996.
