KSYM 90.1 FM, this college's radio station, won San Antonio's best music radio station for the seventh consecutive year in an annual readers' poll in the San Antonio Current.

KSYM dominated the "You Turn Me On" section of the April 21 issue of the San Antonio Current, while KISS 99.5 FM came in second, followed by MIXX 96.1 FM.

The Current publishes an annual "Best of San Antonio" issue to highlight local favorites around the city in a wide variety of categories, such as best taco truck, places to shop and parks.

"It feels great," Joey Palacios, KSYM program director and radio-television-film sophomore, said. "It's an honor we were chosen seven years in a row. We must be doing something right."

Most commercial stations in San Antonio follow a Top 40 music-style playlist, while KSYM follows a block-style schedule playing different genres of music at different times, KSYM adviser John Onderdonk, radio-television-film professor, said Tuesday.

Among shows done on the block schedule are the "Thursday Nite Metal Show," which features heavy metal with DJ MegaMarcus, and "Musical Starstreams," which features trance and techno.

"Our motto has always been play music that isn't played on commercial stations," Onderdonk said.

The station also has "The Sauce" from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday hosted by Hot Mustard and the Bashman that features college President Robert Zeigler every Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Onderdonk said "The Sauce" is the show that has receive the most feedback.

In remarks on the balloting, the San Antonio Current wrote, "Enough SA folks have their dial turned to 90.1 FM, perhaps because it's the local station most dedicated to showcasing indie rock and pop 24/7."

Voting was completed by online polling March 3-30.
