Students in Free Enterprise is sending eight students to regional competition with dreams of heading to the national stage.

SIFE is an international nonprofit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize college students to make a difference in their communities.

Students who participate in SIFE apply business concepts to the community to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.

Each year, SIFE enters the regional competition in Dallas where students compete against two-year and four-year universities to develop business projects in six categories: market economics, success skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business ethics and environmental sustainability.

Each project is presented to a panel of judges, peopled by presidents and CEOs of companies.

Competition is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. March 30 in Dallas. The presentation team consists of eight members who are not willing to settle for first runner-up, but have their sights set on the championship, which would propel them to national competition May 11- 13 in Minneapolis, Minn.

The presentation team members are David Rodriguez, Esmeralda Ramahi, Valerie Morales, Jennifer Kinnaird, Steve Davila, Robert Williams, Dermon Smith and Cristine Gutierrez.

The SIFE club here — the only chapter among the Alamo Colleges — formed in 1997 with Dr. Charles Hunt, business professor, as faculty adviser. Hunt was inducted into the Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellowship.

SIFE is looking for students who have a desire to make a difference in the community and environment.
