Campus police will begin issuing tickets Monday to vehicles without an Alamo Colleges parking permit.

Parking permits are required for all students, faculty and staff parking on campus.

According to the district website, permits can be purchased at the business office for $50 after a vehicle registration form is completed with the following information: Social Security number, license plate number, year of vehicle, make of vehicle and model of vehicle.

The business office is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Tuesday in Room 201 of Fletcher Administration Center.

According to the district’s parking rules and regulations, vehicles parked in a designated campus lot without a permit will be issued a $16 ticket if paid within 10 school or work days from the date it was issued, $21 if paid from 11–20 days. After 20 days the fee will increase to $27.

In 2011, 6,527 parking citations were issued at this campus; 4,738 were for no parking permit Alamo Colleges Police Chief Don Adams said in an email Friday.

Unauthorized vehicles blocked in a handicapped slot or any vehicles blocking a driveway, double-parked, parked along a fire lane or presenting a danger will be towed, he said.

Before campus police authorize towing, officers will try to locate the registered owner of the vehicle and allow the owner to move the vehicle within a reasonable amount of time.

“This is why it is important for students to register their car, to be tracked down,” Adams said.

For information on any towed vehicle, contact the Alamo Colleges Police Department at 210-485-0099.

Additional parking is now available at Playland Park, 2222 N. Alamo St., because of construction on campus.

All students, faculty and staff must have a parking permit to park at the new off-campus lot.

A free shuttle service operates from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, through Friday from the parking area every 15 minutes, which will drop and pick up riders at its designated stop near Fletcher.

Adams said no officer is stationed at this off-campus site, but there are temporary attendants monitoring the lot from its opening to closing time.

A mobile patrol passes through the lot every hour for about 15 minutes, campus coordinator Marisa Saccio said.

“There is not enough parking for everyone to have his or her own space,” Adams said, “Always leave yourself additional time to look for a parking.”

Students who want to avoid the parking permits and hassles can purchase a VIA semester pass for $35 at the business office, or the VIA Metropolitan Transit Center located at 1021 San Pedro Ave., or online at www.viainfo.net.
